Teradata is looking for a Manager of Requirements and Research for Demand Chain Management:
Seeking an experienced, innovative and results oriented manager to lead the research and requirements teams into the next generation of customer centric Demand Chain Management (DCM) solutions. The ideal candidate will have a background in retail strategy and experience in contemporary product management using agile methodologies for scalable retail applications. This role requires an individual with excellent analytical abilities as well as outstanding business acumen. The candidate must be a quick learner with the ability to adapt quickly in a fast paced ever changing environment and be in tune with the latest industry trends to help shape the overall DCM strategy.
• Subject matter expert in the retail replenishment and forecasting space who is up to date with the emerging supply chain concepts, technologies, trends with the ability to drive retail best practices into an enterprise solution.
• Participates and leads the process of collecting and understanding business and technical requirements with external (customers) and internal teams. Translates market driven business requirements into forward thinking cohesive ideas and substantiates them with proposals, estimates and requirements documents.
• Abstract and conceptualize the big picture while developing product requirements thereby providing engineering a comprehensive view into designing generic framework based applications instead of tactical non-reusable components.
• Coordinates customer, competitive, ROI analysis and market research activities to document and drive priorities and requirements in order to define differentiated product feature offerings throughout the product development process.
• Work closely with engineering to plan release timelines, prioritize features, and design capabilities around a highly-iterative functional release schedule. Provide expertise during the design and development phases of product delivery and plays a leadership role in a cross-functional team.
• Writes functional specifications, use cases, creates prototypes for usability testing, and works closely with the engineering, documentation, quality assurance, support teams through delivery of the release.
• Builds strong relationships with key product group leaders and develops a framework for translating and communicating roadmap and lifecycle requirements for all the relevant parties.
• Attends and presents at customer-facing events, Industry events and user conferences in the role of a retail replenishment and forecasting expert.
• Drive team efforts for continuous improvement to refine, standardize, and document approaches and methodologies for improving the product development process.
• Participate in the growth of the company by helping to reinforce company culture, recruit talent, and develop positive partner relationships.
This is a pretty senior role at Teradata, a fairly successful company with a 2.7B market cap. and it looks like demand-chain-management is a focus area for them. Although their stock price has come down lately, hasn’t everyone’s? They still seem to be in decent shape, including a recent alliance with Deloitte. They also seem to know what they want, with a reasonable and detailed role description. It’s also a linkedin posting, so you might find you have a connection in your network that can help to make a recommendation (although, really, shouldn’t you be making those checks anyway?)
Their location seems to be out at 401 and Mississauga road, which is pretty far west for almost everyone. If you’re not already in missisauga, brampton, or points further west (Milton, Guelph, Cambridge) this location is probably pushing it for many of you.
I’m getting somewhat mixed messages with respect to process, as they reference iterative and agile, but they also talk a lot about functional specifications, use cases, and so forth. If process is important to you, I’m going to suggest you try and get a better feel for how they work.
Well, for starters, “competitive base salary” doesn’t mean a heck of a lot. What are the details of the compensation? And when they say “Manager of Requirements and Research,” what do they mean by research? Is this market research or research and development sort of research? And when they say manager, do they mean that you manage the requirements and research, or manage a team of people? It seems more likely to be the former, given the role description. How does this role differ from a product management role? Given the need to talk to customers and go to conferences, and the fact that Teradata is a company with a fair number of offices, how much travel would be expected? What’s the organizational structure you’d be working in? How important is demand-chain management to teradata (e.g. percentage of revenues)? What are the challenges facing someone in this role? Given the reference to it, have there been issues creating tactical non-reusable components rather than generic framework-based applications?
Your mileage may vary when it comes to a totally hands-off role; it doesn’t seem likely that you’re going to be touching code directly, although perhaps you’ll be working closely with those who are.
It’s also pretty enterprisey. Teradata is a big company and they’re in the business of helping other big companies with their big company needs. Some of you are hoping to work for consumer-focused startups, which this definitely isn’t going to be.
This is most interesting if you’re interested in being something close to a product manager in Demand Chain Management out of Mississauga.
