Little Bites: ‘Teach’ Lead, Sapient, Rails, Police

April 22, 2008

Agilon puts a lot of effort into their job postings.  For instance, they’re looking for a Teach Lead in TorontoUS, ON, CA which is apparently another way to say ‘Detroit, MI’.

Sapient is always looking for people in Toronto, it seems.  They’re still looking for a Solutions Architect and a Manager, Technology, both of whom should apparently be open to frequent overnight travel.

Someone is looking for Rails developers with PHP experience in Toronto.  If I had to guess, I’d say this sounds like Avid Life Media still.

Being a senior developer for the Toronto Police sounds like an odd but possibly interesting experience in its own way.  Unfortunately, it’s public-sector, so senior developer means $70-$80k here.

Little Bites: Wireless n-Tire, DVP & Eg, Tech Head, Stealth-Mode

April 18, 2008

Value-Added Recruiting is helping someone look for a Sr. J2EE Software Developer who can do wireless work.  It’s understandably wireless, because they’re looking for an “n-tire” server or web application.

CPAS is looking for some team leaders at the DVP and Eglinton.  The posting as a whole doesn’t grab me, but the location might appeal to some.

Bank of Montreal is looking for a Technology Head.  It’s an odd title, and the posting doesn’t really clarify for me, but it sounds like a senior position at a bank, if that’s interesting to you.

Star Software Developer for Stealth-Mode Company is interesting simply by being mysterious.

Little Bites: Phantomfiber/VSS, Riptown, $105/hr contract

April 14, 2008

Phantomfiber is looking for a deployment / configuration manager. This is a great place to exercise your knowledge of Ant, Java, VSS … Hello? Wait, where’d they go? (Does anyone looking for ‘configuration manager’ roles really think VSS is an option?) In all seriousness, if you’re looking for Mobile Java, they’re also looking for developers, I just can’t get past the VSS mention long enough to take it seriously. There’s also a gambling factor to consider.

Riptown is looking for a Manager of Software Development and a Technical Team Lead via goldminds. Riptown sounds like a fun company, but their focus is almost completely on online gaming / gambling, and it’s been my experience that most people will reject a company on that basis, so I’m not going to spend much time going into details.

Inteqna is helping “one of the globes most recognizable firms” look for a Web Project Lead in Scarborough.  They say, “[t]his client is a marquee name which will stand out in the successful candidate’s portfolio.”  It’s an 8-month contract where rates could go as high as $105/hr, apparently, which could be $135k for 8 months’ work, not entirely displeasing.  There isn’t a ton of detail here.

The Hive: Ruby on Rails

April 11, 2008

The Hive is looking for a Ruby on Rails developer and they’re putting word on the street through several recruiters.  They’re looking for someone with a pretty in-depth background in Ruby and Rails, but if that’s your thing, and you don’t mind working from home, they may be worth a call:

Strong experience developing in the Ruby on Rails framework with operational examples of prior work.
Strong understanding of MySQL 4.1 and beyond
Background in developing for GNU/Linux or Unix-like platforms for mission-critical production deployments
Operational code published and still in production
Strong analytical and logical thinking capability
Must have excellent layout and design abilities
Strong experience developing for Mac OS X

Always A Plus
Object oriented programming experience in PHP with operational examples of prior work
Experience with MySQL 5.x, MySQL replication, MySQL Cluster
High-availability and scalable network service deployment
Expertise with MVC, HTML, CSS2, Javascript, AJAX, Templating, caching, sessions, and authentication
GNU/Linux optimization, security and network administration
Secure coding practices
Experience with running Apache or other Unix-based web servers in a production environment

The Hive’s website goes into some details about the company, but this posting doesn’t:

Our Client is a virtual organization. They log in from their homes, nearby offices, one of theirglobal office locations, or wherever they have an internet connection.

The Good
Well, they’re a little cagey about salary, but the rest of the package sounds pretty generous (full benefits, dual 30″ displays, etc.), so this side may pan out in the end.  After all, they don’t have the overhead cost of office space, which adds up fast.

The Bad
Their biggest and baddest application seems to be a dating service.  That’s not everyone’s cup of tea.  Much like Toronto’s ALM, you may have to decide if this is work you want to do.

The posting is pretty low on information in all categories.  You’re basically going to have to follow up if you’re interested to get enough information just to find out what the role is, what the compensation is, what the work will be, etc.

YMMV
I’m not sure how everyone feels about working from home.  Some people see it as a plus, many people seem to feel it’s a negative.

In Summary
If you think you’ve got the background and the chops to impress them with your operational ruby expertise, and you’re willing to work from home, it seems worth further investigation, but it’s hard to offer anything more concrete than that.  It is, at least, intriguing.

Little Bites: Oyster Tech, East York, CPNI Agile Tester

April 10, 2008

Oyster Tech is out of Massachusetts, but looking to fill an Architect position in Toronto.  Odd.  If I had more telecom background, I might inquire just to learn why.

Inteqna is helping someone look for a Senior Java Developer in East York.  I’m curious who the company is, since East York might be awfully convenient for some people I know.

I won’t pretend I know what Test Engineers are looking for in a job, and this location (Burnhamthorpe/427) is just awful for me, but there’s enough little bits of interest in CPNI’s Agile Software Test Engineer to pass it on to those of you looking for something just like that.

Little Bites: CBC, Heenan, Microsoft/Ireland, Devlin

April 10, 2008

CBC is clearly still looking for their Senior Applications Manager (15-Feb-2008, 30-Jan-2008): Craigslist/Modis, Craigslist. I’m still skeptical about the compensation, and the one person I know who has worked for the CBC doesn’t have overly-inspiring words of encouragement, but there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the posting, and I think the CBC is an interesting organization.

Heenan would like you to qualify for the “hidden job market” by putting your information in their databank. While I agree the ‘hidden job market’ exists, I don’t believe the jobs that recruiters hold are usually in that category. If a recruiter is retained, why would they not do their best to attract additional candidates? That said, if you’re willing to trust ‘em … maybe there’s an interesting job in it for you.

Microsoft still (20-Feb) wants You to move to Ireland. Ireland’s a nice place, if you’re willing to move. Well, it seemed nice in the two weeks I was there, anyway, which I suppose isn’t the same thing. Still, interesting opportunity for the mobile and Microsoft-oriented.

Devlin’s still (22-Feb-2008) looking for that tech lead / architect.

Little Bites: Senior Manager, Travel Requirements

April 1, 2008

CareerMatch is helping a financial institution look for a Senior Manager, Application Development. The role’s pretty senior, and some parts of the position look good, but I get worried when a senior manager is required to know shell scripting in Perl and when Waterfall is the only process that gets mentioned, particularly on the same page as ‘follow the documented SDLC.’ I declined to dig much farther than that.

ATS is helping someone look for a Manager, Application Development Services who can ‘fulfill travel requirements’. If that’s not specific enough for you, you might want to talk to them directly. I hope that ATS isn’t the only recruiter helping with this job.

Little Bites: .NET/Java Technical Lead, Intelliware Architect, Java Developer

March 29, 2008

Robert Half is looking for a Technical Lead with good experience in both .NET and Java, with decent listed compensation. There’s not a lot of details there, and the technology stack leans toward .NET, but if that’s your bent and you’d like to consider getting paid $90-115k, I’m sure Robert Half would like to hear from you.

Looks like Bevertec is trying to help Intelliware find that architect.

This posting seems to be casting the net pretty wide.  A Java developer looking for a fun working environment with some basic technology requirements.  If anyone responds to this, do let me know what it is, I’m morbidly curious.

Little Bites: Intelliware, JumpTV, Technical Architect

March 15, 2008

Intelliware is still looking for an Architect. (Agile, west end, pay is decent but not stellar.)

JumpTV is looking for a Director, Core Technology and BrainHunter is helping ‘em out.

While IPTV is a technology that seems relevant in the long-term, I haven’t seen a lot of immediate impact. Worse, I’m not sure that JumpTV is going to be around long enough to take advantage of the long-term, at least based on a quick examination of their Google Finance summary. I am by no means a finance guru, but management shakeups and share price drops don’t seem promising.

TAL Group is helping someone look for a technical architect.  As is often true of recruiter postings, this one has been sanitized of the information required to make it interesting.  What’s the company?  What do they do?  What would you be working on?  Why work here?  What’s the compensation?  At this vague level, it looks reasonable.

Little Bites: Rock Star, L2EE

February 29, 2008

Although I imagine that prospective candidates find if flattering to imagine themselves as a “rock star” programmer in a field that is really low on rock-star glamour and street-cred, I have to say that I’d rather have slightly less flattery and slight more information on the role, project, company and compensation.  The phrase “knows C#Net, and has extensively written Windows Threaded Services and has written serial port communication software” is not really a lot to go on.

Although it’s possible that this job posting meant to refer to something real when it makes reference to ‘L2EE’, like this paper on Lightweight Process Coordination and J2EE, but … I think they just made a mistake, and then repeated it.
